How much is a business brokers commission?
Typically, a business brokers commission is between 5-10% of the business sale price. This varies depending on the expected price of the business and the amount of work the broker predicts is involved in the sale. A broker will normally want to earn a minimum of $15,000 sales commission, though it can be $100,000+ if selling a multi million-dollar company.
Business Brokers are the professionals who focus on the buying and selling of businesses and franchises. When looking at marketing fees there are generally four classes advertising packages will fall into;
- Advertise you on their own site and charge you either nothing or a small marketing fee. This will not give you hardly any exposure and may mean your business does not sell.
- Advertise you on one larger site for a limited period and charge you a smallish fee, e.g $500-$1,000. You may miss up to 80% of enquiry depending on where you are listed. Missing 80% of buyers may mean your business does not sell.
- Advertise you in their online and offline magazine and claim to attract international buyers and charge $5,000 upwards. Be wary of this. Most businesses in Australia sell to locally based owners. The opportunity to buy a business and move to Australia has mostly being removed from the immigration code as of 5 years ago – this option really will only cost you time and money and produce no results.
